Area 08: Emergent Coordination & Collective Intelligence
Master Question
How can global order emerge without anyone designing it?
What We Want to Discover
Some of the most robust coordination we know of, insect colonies, flocks, markets, was never designed top down. This area studies whether comparable emergent coordination can be engineered deliberately in artificial multi-agent systems, what local rules are sufficient to produce useful global behaviour, and where that emergent order breaks down.
Why It Matters
Centralized coordination has a single point of failure and a communication bottleneck. If useful coordination can emerge from local rules alone, systems can become more scalable and more resilient at the same time.
