Area 09: Multi-Agent Communication
Master Question
What information must intelligences exchange in order to cooperate?
What We Want to Discover
Communication is costly and bandwidth is finite, so agents cannot simply share everything. This area studies what agents choose to communicate when the content and timing of messages are themselves learned, whether emergent communication protocols are interpretable, and how much communication is actually necessary to achieve a given level of coordination.
Why It Matters
Communication bandwidth, latency, and reliability are real constraints in any deployed multi-agent or multi-robot system. Knowing the minimum information exchange required for cooperation, rather than assuming unlimited communication, is essential for realistic system design.
