Gondwana IA: connecting ecosystems through open science
NEW PROJECT · GONDWANA IA
On 21 September 2026, Kahlo Group, where I work, began a new collaboration with researchers from the Centro de Investigación en Medio Ambiente y Desarrollo at Universidad de Manizales, together with researchers based in Australia, to develop Gondwana IA.
The project uses open Earth observation data, geospatial methods and NASA/IBM’s Prithvi-EO-2.0 model to explore how environmental change can be compared across very different mountain ecosystems.
At the centre of the project is the idea of an Ecosystem Passport: a documented profile that brings together environmental signals, their interpretation and their limitations for each ecosystem.
We will begin by looking at mountain ecosystems in Colombia and Australia through four dimensions: moisture, vegetation, fire disturbance and recovery. The question is not whether these ecosystems are the same, but what they share, where they diverge, and what we can learn from those differences.
The longer-term idea is to leave an open and reproducible method that other researchers can examine, adapt and use to build Ecosystem Passports for other ecosystems.
